Becoming An Interim Head

Interim Heads is a new regional service creating opportunities for highly skilled headteachers who are looking for a new challenge or a change of direction in their careers. We are currently recruiting so please register your interest soon.

Placements exist in a range of primary schools, some in need of improvement to provide better quality education, others being well run but needing experienced leadership for a limited period.

1. Enquiry. Discuss why you might choose to become an interim head by ringing 07761247340. Alternatively provide your details on the contact form opposite if you would like us to approach you. Or send your confidential CV to tim@interimheads.co.uk

2. Application. We will arrange an informal interview with you at a mutually convenient time and place. Subject to both parties wishing to proceed, references will be taken and various other checks carried out. See Screening & Quality Assurance procedure opposite.

3. Assignments.  We notify you of potential vacancies which range from a term to a year and are often renewable. At your consent we send your CV to the school concerned as part of a short list of candidates, and if selected you then attend a scoping meeting/interview in order for you to assure yourself that the school is right for you and to discuss the particular context and priorities of the assignment.

4. Partnership. We arrange for contracts to be drawn up according to agreed objectives, targets and terms. You are contracted to us, we are contracted to the client. In the first weeks of the assignment you agree an action plan with the school for the duration of the assignment based on this contract and your own appraisal of the school's needs.

5. Payment. You invoice us on a monthly basis as a self-employed associate in line with an agreed day rate and we invoice the school. Your day rate will vary depending on your last substantive point on the leadership scale and the school's ISR.

6. Support. In order to ensure a successful interim assignment an Interim Heads consultant will provide you with regular coaching support and monitor progress in dialogue with you and the school. This is in addition to the usual challenge and support that Local Authorities will continue to provide.

7. Renewal. You may want to flexibly extend the interim assignment if the school wants to negotiate this.
